Kris Risto, depicts figures in vistas of the dreamlike Macedonian landscape from his childhood. His surreal depictions of people and places are combined with a transformative effect of color and subject in a heavily Byzantine influenced style. The people, the earth, the sky, the clouds, and the mountains are meant to puzzle and inspire existential questions in the viewer. Questions of where we came from, who we are, and where we are going.
He has a reverence for the past and a love of how it applies to the present and future. As a first generation American he has always felt displaced between two cultures. He was born in Erie Pennsylvania yet spent much of his childhood in his families native country Macedonia. He feels like he is in between both cultures, always having to defend the differences of one to the other.
The artist paints, draws and occasionally sculpts. Quite often religious imagery, science fiction, and figures fill his work. His primary medium is painting where he heavily relies on Byzantine imagery conventions and styles. His art shows a confident understanding of the figure and its role in art history.
Risto’s exhibitions include several solo exhibitions, and many others with the Northwestern Pennsylvania Artists Association and the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh.
The artist was juried into both the Northwestern Pennsylvania Artists Association and the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh. He has also exhibited in several juried museum exhibitions.
His artwork is included in numerous private art collections throughout the area. He has also created many commissioned works of art, and murals in the area.
